I. Executive Summary
The prebiotic soda category crossed from wellness niche to mainstream CPG in 2025. Coca-Cola launched Simply Pop in February. PepsiCo paid $1.95B for Poppi the following month. Every major global beverage company now has a prebiotic play. The US market alone is valued at $440M and growing at 8% CAGR to 2034.
In Southeast Asia, none of these brands exist. Indonesia's prebiotics market is growing at 17.3% CAGR through 2033 — one of the fastest rates globally — with regulatory clearance already in place since 2021. No regional prebiotic soda brand has launched.
More acutely: the prebiotic energy drink has not been built anywhere in the world. RYSE (US, May 2025) is the closest attempt, but leads with protein. The fusion of prebiotic gut-health and energy positioning is a genuine global white space.

The opportunity in one sentence: The brands generating $400M+ in US prebiotic soda revenue have zero presence in Southeast Asia. Indonesia has regulatory clearance, a 17.3% CAGR market, and no regional champion. The prebiotic energy fusion category has no global leader.
II. Global Market Landscape
The prebiotic soda category was built by two US independents — Olipop and Poppi — between 2018 and 2024. By H1 2025, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo had both entered with purpose-built products. The category is US-centric. No equivalent brand has launched in Southeast Asia.
Selected brand landscape
- Olipop (Oakland, 2018): 9g OLISMART prebiotic blend (cassava root + chicory root + Jerusalem artichoke). $400M revenue in 2024, valued at $1.85B. Highest fiber dose — the safest formulation position in the category.
- Poppi (Austin, 2018): 2g agave inulin + apple cider vinegar. Acquired by PepsiCo for $1.95B in March 2025. Currently subject to class-action litigation: 2g of agave inulin is being challenged as insufficient for the gut-health claims made. Informal threshold established: 5g+ is the defensible dose.
- Simply Pop (Coca-Cola, Feb 2025): 6g prebiotic fiber blend + real fruit juice. National US rollout H1 2025. Coca-Cola's direct response to the category.
- Pepsi Prebiotic Cola (Fall 2025): 3g prebiotic fiber. First cola format in the category. US convenience stores early 2026.
- Bloom Pop (Nutrabolt × Bloom, Mar 2025): Social-media native brand (TikTok/Instagram) expanding to Walmart. Announced Expo West 2025.
- SunSip (Health-Ade, Feb 2024): Agave inulin + vitamins C/B6/B12 + zinc. Whole Foods exclusive launch.
Legal risk note: The Poppi class-action has set an informal industry standard. Any formulation should target ≥5g total prebiotic fiber to withstand regulatory and legal scrutiny. Olipop's 9g is the strongest position. Formulations below 5g carry litigation exposure.
Market trajectory
- Global prebiotic soda: $264M (2024) → $564M (2034) at 8% CAGR.
- US market (leading indicator): $440M in 2024–25, with all major CPGs now participating.
- SEA presence: Zero. None of the brands above operate in Southeast Asia.
III. The Prebiotic Energy Opportunity
A true RTD prebiotic energy drink — one that co-leads with both prebiotic gut-health and energy claims — does not exist as a mainstream global product. The category is forming around the edges. No brand owns it.
Entrant analysis
- RYSE (US, May 2025) — closest attempt: 150mg natural caffeine · 8g protein · prebiotics · zero sugar. Launched in Target, QuikTrip, HEB. CEO pitch explicitly combines energy + protein + prebiotics. However: protein is the hero. This is a sports nutrition product, not a prebiotic energy drink. Prebiotic is the supporting cast.
- Bloom Energy Drink — partial: Caffeine + prebiotics + lychee, zero sugar. But Bloom then launched "Bloom Pop" as a separate prebiotic soda (Expo West 2025) — signalling they treat the two as distinct SKUs, not a unified positioning.
- LoveBiome PhytoPower X — niche: Claims "world's first microbiome-friendly big-energy beverage." 250mg caffeine. Uses probiotics (not prebiotics). MLM distribution — not a retail play.
- ResBiotic prebeet ENERGY+ (Jan 2024) — not RTD: Prebiotic + beetroot. Caffeine-free powder sachet. Not a direct competitor category.
Verdict: No brand anywhere leads with a co-equal prebiotic + energy identity at mainstream scale. In Southeast Asia, even the prebiotic soda category is completely untouched. The prebiotic energy drink is a genuine global white space — and the SEA first-mover opportunity is immediate.
IV. Southeast Asia — The First-Mover Window
Indonesia's gut-health beverage market is dominated by probiotic dairy: Yakult, Danone, Nestlé. Prebiotic functional drinks in the Olipop/Poppi style do not exist in the Indonesian market. The brands generating $400M+ in US prebiotic soda revenue have zero SEA presence.

Why the window is open now
- BPOM regulatory clearance is live. Indonesia's food regulator approved the prebiotic claim for chicory root inulin and oligofructose (BENEO Orafti®) in 2021. It is the only BPOM-approved prebiotic ingredient. The regulatory runway is built — no new approval required.
- No regional prebiotic soda brand exists. Olipop, Poppi, Simply Pop — none have launched in SEA. The category is wide open.
- Urban health consciousness is rising. Singapore Nutri-Grade labeling (Dec 2024) signals a regional shift toward functional ingredient transparency. Jakarta and Bali premium consumers are receptive to functional claims.
- Energy drink growth is accelerating. US retail energy drink sales grew +15% in the 52 weeks to November 2025 (Circana). Energy + functional convergence is the dominant macro trend in beverages globally.
- Probiotic market is large; prebiotic is untapped. Indonesia's yogurt/probiotic drink market is worth $650M, dominated by Yakult, Danone, Nestlé. Prebiotics as a standalone functional positioning in beverages is essentially unclaimed.
This is a first-mover window. The infrastructure (regulatory, distribution, manufacturing) exists. The market is growing at 17.3% CAGR. No competitor has moved. The question is not whether to enter — it is what to build and at what dose.
V. Formulation Guidance
The threshold that matters: 5g+ per can. The Poppi class-action has established that 2g of agave inulin is insufficient for the gut-health claims made. Olipop's 9g is the safest position in the market. Any Candid formulation should target ≥5g total prebiotic fiber to withstand regulatory and legal scrutiny.
Recommended ingredient stack
- Primary — Agave Inulin (3–4g): RTD-optimised. Neutral taste, high solubility, stable in acidic pH. Slow fermentation = gentler GI response. Clean-label consumer appeal. Note: not BPOM-listed — may require regulatory filing. Use in blend with chicory fraction for compliance.
- Secondary — Chicory Root Inulin (2–3g): Most clinically studied prebiotic. EFSA-approved for normal defecation. BPOM Indonesia approved (Orafti®) — the only BPOM-compliant prebiotic. Provides the regulatory and clinical backbone of any formulation.
- Optional — Resistant Dextrin (2–3g): Adds postprandial glucose modulation claim (RCT published Apr 2025, medRxiv). Fully soluble, heat-stable, flavour-neutral. Less consumer-recognizable as a label claim but clinically strong.
Total target: 5–7g. Agave for sensory and RTD performance, chicory for BPOM compliance and clinical backing, resistant dextrin for glucose claim if desired.
